The IDFA B.C. Classic held at the Gateway Theatre on June 3 featured many top natural athletes from across British Columbia and Alberta. The 2nd annual IDFA B.C. Classic was bigger than last year and the quality of athletes was outstanding. Competing on this day were athletes ranging from Novice to Open, and Masters (40 years old and over). This was an IDFA Pro-Qualifier competition meaning the Open level overall winners earned IDFA Pro Cards and the respect as the ‘best of the best’ in the IDFA.

ALLMAX Nutrition, our Gold Sponsor showed their support of these great natural athletes with many giveaways.

First up was the IDFA Transformation Challenge with 4 participants.  To say their stories were inspiring doesn’t do them justice.  This was one of the most moving and inspiring moments of the night, and rightly so.  After sharing their journeys and their new bodies it was time to select a winner. They are all winners however it was time to make the choice.  Kaylee Norton of Royston, BC was selected as the winner. Kaylee went from, in her words, “thick to thin.”  Sharing her story was one of the most fulfilling things she has done and she touched many of those in the audience. People think that she was always this lean fit person and that is not the case. She is proof that we can all make the change.

Following the Transformation Challenge were the equally inspiring Masters Divisions. These divisions are for competitors 40 years of age and older.  A very tough line-up of five Masters Figure competitors stepped on stage and the eventual winner was Kathy Schoenewolf of Ladysmith, BC.  In men’s bodybuilding Neal Hamilton of Surrey, BC took the Masters title.

Next to the stage were the Novices. The highlights of the Novice Divisions included: Stacy Miller of Ladysmith, BC beating out 8 fierce competitors to win the Figure Title; Jordan Coles of Courtenay, BC muscled his way to the Men’s Bodybuilding Title in a very tough class of 7; and Mindy Ambrose of Burnaby, BC took the Fitness Model Title in great line-up of 8 competitors. I see a great future for these 3 athletes and wouldn’t be surprised if they were all IDFA Pros in the near future.

Finishing up the night were the Open Divisions. Some of the best physiques in the game were going after an IDFA Pro Card. The winner of the Open Fitness Model division and IDFA Pro Card was Shannon Bomak of Okotoks, AB.  The men’s bodybuilding division featured many veteran competitors that were “in it to win it.” After a serious round of judging and going pose for pose it was time for the placements.  There was only one point separating first and second, and only one point separating third and fourth.   This was a tough one for the judges.   When the dust had settled the winner and New IDFA Pro was BJ Chursinoff of Coquitlam, BC.  The final division of the night was Open Figure. This was another tough one for the judges with only one point separating first and second.  Erin Crawford with her great proportions and symmetry edged out a very conditioned Kathy Schoenewolf for the Open Figure Title.  This makes Erin Crawford of Nanaimo, BC the winner and New IDFA Pro.  I hope to see them all on the IDFA Pro Stage on July 21 & 22 in Mississauga, Ontario at the IDFA International Championships (Amateur & Pro).

The IDFA continues to lead the way in Natural Bodybuilding, Fitness Model, and Figure and has been doing so since 2005. Visit for more information.

Scoring is done by ranking each competitor. Ranking is done by comparing the physiques of each competitor of each class and ranking them from highest to lowest. The best competitor should be assigned a rank of 1, the next highest competitor should get a rank of 2, and so on.
The highest and lowest rank for each competitor is discarded as a safeguard against favouritism and to protect against human error. The remaining scores are added, and the lowest total receives first place in the class. Second lowest total receives 2nd place, and so on. If a tie results, the competitor who was ranked highest among the tied competitors by a majority of all judges receives the highest placement.
